Michael van der Vlist

Started climbing in 1999 after an unfortunate accident where I broke my ankle and had to stop regular sports, and I’ve been a mountain carnie ever since!

I live just outside of the Blue Mountains and get outside every chance I get. If I’m not pulling rock, I’ll be riding single track on my MTB or trying to kill myself on my Enduro Dirt Bike. I love the technical nature of climbing and the problems it offers, or maybe that should be over-coming the problems presented.

Waterfall Ice climbing is pure bliss to me and I can think of nothing I’d rather be doing then heading up some Canadian Ice.

I’ve rock climbed throughout Australia, and climbed Alpine in New Zealand, Canada and Australia. Spent a few seasons trashing myself in the Canadian Rockies, where bad ice to a Canadian is heaven sent to an Aussie! And only been the one time to the Big hills, which was Cho Oyu in 2004 where I got up to around 7500m.

I’m very determined to get over 8000m on Gasherbrum 1 and if the mountain permits I’m going all the way and coming back down to tell the story.
